It's not a comedy, but it's often funny, and the stories it tells are very gripping (well, except the 1932 one, but it gets very little focus), making you wonder what will happen next. It's a show that's extremely fun to watch, and at the same time it doesn't insult your intelligence. It doesn't get enough accomplished on the first page let alone the first chapter.Īre there redeeming qualities to be seen in this series? As a result, my attention hasn't been grabbed. In short, it is too broad and lacks depth and meaninful details.Too many questions. All I've seen is an introduction to way too many characters, and I don't really know much about any of them (even less than I would expect after only one episode). It seems that the writers want the audience to just take it for granted that the organization they are depicting is some kind of mafia because they say it is and the people are dressed for the part.

I also couldn't help but giggle at the courtyard full of "typical gangsters" in suits and hats that all looked the same and were ready to march out in force on a moment's notice. A few of them are also openly angry and animated. The Mafia-type guys talk way too plainly and straightforwardly. Fair enough, but the writing seems to be out of touch with the discourse of the Mafia or organized crime. The setting seems to be "Early American Twentieth Century" enough, what with all the big to-do's with trains, ships, and tommy guns and such. The "immortals" are not explained yet, but I have a sinking feeling they might turn out to suffer from "superman syndrome". There has been an exceedingly large amount of violence with little apparent consequence so far (this falls under my "mysterious mindless violence" pet peeve).
I won't comment on the artwork or production quality other than to say it has thus far been so-so. It looked like a light-hearted comedy set in the roaring 20s era and something to do about a candy bar? I like the 20s and mafia stuff, so I decided to give Baccano! a shot.
So I just watched the first episode of Baccano! I'll start with my expectations going in based on the opening theme.
So keep this in mind if you have any advice for me. And while I'm discussing common quirks that annoy me, I'll list a few more: closed-eyed smiles/laughing, growing heads, high-pressure blood loss, mysteriously mindless violence, superman syndrome, the list goes on. I'm not fond of "level up" anime like naruto, bleach, or dbz. This is illustrated well by my affinity for some western cartoons that share similarities in artwork (and some themes) to most Anime such as Megas XLR and the Boondocks. I can appreciate the artwork of a lot of Anime separate from the style and content of the writing/acting. Some that I can't stand are Helsing, Claymore, and Neon Genesis (not that new).

Some that I like more recently are Death Note and Code Geass. I grew up watching some of the older stuff like Dragonball, Sailor Moon, Ronin Warriors, and others.
